My ROK espresso maker is corroding or has mineral build-up

To maintain the finish and keep the metal components in working order, it is important to dry the ROK after use. We also recommend removing the white filter seal from under the ROK between uses to aid in drying.

Storing the ROK wet will cause the aluminium to oxidise, leaving marks on the frame. You may also notice a chalky white build-up in areas where residual water can sit for long periods e.g. where the cylinder meets the metal frame, the metal around the white filter screen, around the top screw above the cylinder.

We recommend cleaning your ROK every 3-6 months to remove any residue and prevent the cylinder from becoming stuck. Remove the plunger and cylinder from the ROK to access areas for cleaning (see videos below). Once you have the plunger and cylinder out, you’ll probably find the inside of the main aluminium frame has some oxidisation. Just wipe it with a damp cloth – nothing abrasive. You won’t get it all off. You can use a mix of white vinegar and water. While you’re at it, wipe the coffee residue from the plunger and o-ring too. Allow everything to dry before you put the ROK back together.

If you find the exterior finish on the ROK has become very dull, you may want to try some aluminium polish. Try a little on a very small area first to ensure it works before applying to the rest of your ROK.
